Sponsor a Student: Frequently Asked Questions

1. If I must discontinue my child sponsorship, what happens to the child I'm helping?

You can discontinue your sponsorship at any time. If you need to discontinue your child sponsorship, we will immediately look for a new sponsor for your child and continue the child’s sponsorship support without interruption.

2. How can I cancel my sponsorship?

To inquire about canceling your sponsorship, please e-mail sponsor@thesenaseproject.org or call 716-359-1105 to reach one of our representatives.

3. How long should my child sponsorship last?

We encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to sponsor a child for one full school year. While we hope that the communications you receive through participating in the program incentive you to continue your sponsorship after the school year, we recognize that sponsors’ circumstances may change and you may discontinue your sponsorship at any time. Please understand that a sponsored child’s circumstances may change, too. We will do our best to inform you in a timely manner if any circumstances affect the child you sponsor and we will offer you the opportunity to support another child in need of your help.

4. How much does it cost to sponsor a child?

The cost is only $20 a month.

5. What is the money used for?

Students are required to cover the expenses of exercise books, notebooks, pens, pencils, maths sets, school fees, lunch, transportation, toiletries, printing fees, and PTA dues. Your support covers these costs entirely.

6. Will I be the only person sponsoring the child?

Yes. Each child will be matched with just one sponsor, which is why your continued support means so much to the child and their family.

7. What will the child receive as a result of my sponsorship?

Students are required to cover the expenses of exercise books, notebooks, pens, pencils, maths sets, school fees, lunch, transportation, toiletries, printing fees, and PTA dues. Your support covers these costs entirely.

8. As a sponsor, how else can I learn about the child I am helping?

We will send you periodic updates about the child’s progress in school to provide you with an understanding of the impact that your help has on this student’s life.

9. How can I communicate with the child I sponsor?

Once you become a sponsor, we will provide you with a special package that includes: a pamphlet which explains the program as well as provides details about the specific student you are sponsoring. You may write to your child as often as you like, and the child will write to you at least three times during the year.

10. May I send gifts to my child?

Yes. We encourage sponsors to give additional monetary gifts to their sponsored children for special occasions, to address specific needs, or simply as an act of love. These gifts are another effective way for you to reinforce your care and commitment to your child. One hundred percent of all individual child gift amounts go to that child. You may also send a gift to your sponsored child’s family. With your monetary gift of $25 to $500, our team will buy items your child’s family needs, such as new beds, livestock and food supplies. We will work closely with the family to determine the greatest need and then purchase items accordingly. One hundred percent of all family gift amounts go to that child’s family.

11. How does The Senase Project ensure that my support actually benefits the child I sponsor?

We work with several reliable partners on the ground in Ghana to ensure that all money goes towards its intent. For this project, we work directly with Issah Kbore, one of the teachers at the school, as well as Jon Pingle, who is the headmaster at the Akatim Village School. In addition, Olivia Benneh, our Director of Country Operations, is responsible for handling all money and overseeing all spending.

12. Are my contributions to The Senase Project, including my sponsorship support and gifts, tax deductible?

Yes. All contributes are tax-deductible in the United States. Our EIN is 27-4135970. You will receive a receipt after each of your monthly donations.
